Born into an ecclesiastical family,〔His father was The ''Rev. Canon Clifford Plumpton Wilson'' > “Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 he was educated at Winchester College and Keble College, Oxford, and ordained in 1936.〔Crockford's Clerical Directory1940-41 Oxford, OUP,1941〕 After curacies at St Paul’s, Princes Park, Liverpool, and St John's, Smith Square, he was Vicar of South Shore, Blackpool, and Archdeacon of Nottingham before his elevation to the Episcopate.
